Iowa SPEcialist Hello to all Iowa SPE Members.
It's been a long dry spell for our Section. We have not been in the active status for over a year and it's been long enough. I've drawn a line in the perverbial sand said we need to do something about this. I called upon some long time members and past board members to have a teleconfernce to discuss our plan of attack.
Our first discussion began in January 2009 with three options of 1) rebuilding, 2) merging with another Section, and 3) closing. It was debated and concluded togo with Option 1, rebuilding.
Also discussed was our financial status of having a bank balance of $2,800. Since we were not active for over a year, we do not qualify for the SPE rebates. Thusly another reason for reactivating our Section to allow us to get our rebates. We also discussed the need to have a new slate of officers to lead us in our year of rebuilding and allow time to recruit new members and new board members for 2010-2011.
Ths second teleconference took place on March 6th when we selected new officers to their roles for July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.

Membership Letter Dear Iowa Section Member:
The Iowa Society of Plastics Engineers would like to thank you for your continued support this past year. Your SPE membership has provided a myriad of professional benefits. Some of which you are receiving Plastics Engineering magazine, access to the Iowa web site, www.iowaspe.org, and the International web site www.4spe.org where you can obtain members only access to the technical library, membership directory, online communities, and much more. There are also opportunities to volunteer at various levels where you can hone your leadership skills, assist with developing future programs and events that provide teaching opportunities putting on seminars and various training sessions that also generate additional revenue streams for the Section too.
We are faced with some challenges as we move into our fiscal year, which begins September 1, 2008 with needing to fill some vacancies on the board of directors. Due to relocations and time served on the board, we have opportunities for those who would like to be involved in handling the taking of minutes at meetings (Secretary), coordinating various programs for the year (Programming Chair), taking in the monies, making deposits, paying bills and IRS Filing (Treasurer), tending to membership recruitment and retention (Membership Chair) and working with state, local schools in educational affairs to share the wonders of plastics for the future young plastics professionals( Education Chair). SPE provides all the necessary training to learn your role and will travel to Iowa to deliver that training. This is truly a rewarding opportunity to really understand how you’re Section and International works and provides additional experience to your background you would not normally receive through your work.
We hope you will continue your support and also step forward to help grow, shape and possibly lead the Section with us this fiscal year. We hope this would be a step in the right direction to help the Section and to also make you a more skilled professional where hopefully be recognized by your employer and peers.
If you have any questions, or would like more information on what you can do to help your Section and yourself, please feel free to call me or Andy Bondhus any time. At the end of this letter are the positions of the Iowa Section that need filled.
Best regards,
Sam McCord Public Relations Chair
